My Dear Fellow Zooids and Friends of UPZS,
My name is Martin R G Marasigan, a UPZS member Batch 81 and a UP Graduate Batch 83. While most of the ZS members are now medical doctors, I am one of those who were not fortunate whough to be able to finance a medical career and so I became an attorney. I practiced for 7 years in Manila and for the past 16 years have practiced in Houston, Texas.
I write you today as President of the University of the Philippines Zoological Society Alumni Association of North America, Inc (UPZSAANA). A group of alumni/ alumnae members of UPZS decided to incorporate and formalize the organization about 18 months ago.
While some of you would consider life at our alma mater, University of the Philippines, Diliman Quezon CIty as a phase in your lives, a vast majority look at their time at UP as one that has enriched, developed, and enhanced their lives. More specifically, the time that was enjoyed at the Owl's Nest, as members and/or friends of the UP Zoological Society has, in most cases, determined who we are as of the present or what we are today.
It is in this light that most of those who felt an obligation to ensure that the legacy of the UPZS and of the Owl's Nest is continued to provide guidance, direction and or inspiration to the future generations of Zooids, decided to spare some of their precious time in the orga nization and establishment of the UPZSAANA.
As you know or if you are not aware: the administration of UP has removed the course of Bachelor of Science in Zoology. Most recently our beloved Owl's Nest has been razed and demolished. 2012 will be the 60th Diamond Anniversary of the establishment of UPZS as an organization in UP.
With these incidents as a background, a group of us decided to seriously considerin continuing the ZS spirit, born and raised at the Owl's Nest, to provide a forum to harness each other's potential to "give back" to our beloved Alma Mater (or the Philippines) in general, and to UPZS in particular. Currently, even without a BS Zoology program, the UPZS as an organization is alive and kicking at UP.
The current Board of Trustees of UPZSAANA has decided to launch several projects geared towards the plan of "giving back"
I write you to consider being a member of the UPZSAANA, Inc. and to help achieve its projects in however manner you may want be it by service or financially. We are still growing and there is a need to get as much people involved.
I always remembered that during our time at UP, the greatest asset of our organization are the members comprising it. We would have 70 registered members and then there will be 300 applicants. From the 300 applicants, 150 will turn into Probies, and from the 150 about 80 will become members. We were one of the largest Organizations in UP during our time. The more people involved, the greater things that can be accomplished.
We also welcome donations. This year it is the plan of the Board to make UPZSAANA, Inc a 501 (c) (3) Organization so that all donations may be tax deductible.
There is a website for the Organization http://upzs.weebly.com so each member can be apprised of what is happening with ZS in any part of the world. We have members in almost all continents in the world.
If you share in our belief that we can do our part in making this world a better place to live, or just feel that we can do our part in contributing to the betterment of our country in general or our University in particular, please, join us by being members and sharing some of your precious time, or at the very least, share your soon-to-be tax-deductible contributions to the Organization. We promise you that whoever will lead this organization, the goals for which UPZSAANA was formed will be achieved through the hard work of the Board of Trustees and the members.
Should you need to learn more of the organization, you can talk to Dr Rem Quejada-Baylon at (262) 352-9081, Dr Lalaine Chua Mortera at (203) 770-8741, Ms Joy Naui Seri at (203) 798-2597, or me at (713) 498-0568.We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Respectfully,
(Signed)
